Bat Night

Author’s Note: This is a story about a boy, named Jake that was never taken seriously. He goes on this wild adventure to try and prove his classmates and his own father wrong. His father is a chiropterologist. That means he studies bats.  And Jake, well, all he knows about bats is that they sleep upside down. So he isn’t the brightest person on bats. All he wants is to be taken seriously by his dad.

After Jake left home, he realized something, that he is going on an adventure to the Amazon and he was going to prove himself. Jake finally landed in Manaus and was welcomed by Hanuma. Jake was a little intimidated by his golden tooth right in the front of his mouth. Jake kept his CD player by him so he doesn’t have to listen to this guy talk the whole ride to camp.  Hanuma warned Jake that the camp would be flooded soon but Jake wasn’t worried, he just kept on acting like he knew a lot about bats so Hanuma wouldn’t tell his father that he doesn’t know that much about them. Jake and his father both had no idea what was ahead for them.

Jake and his father could only stand helplessly and watch as the monster devoured Hanuma. Imagine if you saw your dad’s friend being eaten alive by a bat the size of a CAR?! Hanuma was finally a skull and some bones when the bat saw Jake. It recognized him from another incidence. Jake suddenly felt a cringe as he looked at the flowing blood coming from the bat’s mouth. The night the bat came back was worse though. It came after the entire group of people. Radsyar was killed, and Dr. Lefkovitz was seriously injured. “He took the heavy, red drum of gasoline and began to drench the center platform of the canopy. He felt it was the best shot, and he’d decided to use it first. He knew it would depend on upon the bat flying toward him. He’d be the living bait at the end of the puddle fuse. The bat would need to be flying low, flying very low over the fumes when the incendiary pool ignited.” (pg. 116)

Jake would only imagine life without his father. So he was striving to get his father back to the village of Manaus and get him to safety. He knew that the men would make it back. Well if he didn’t then he would probably be right. I can remember when I almost lost my own father. We were at a hotel and one morning I woke up with paramedics in the room and my dad on his bed unconscious. My mom told me he fainted and that is when I got really worried. He told the paramedics that he had fallen in the bathroom and he can’t remember anything else. I thought that he was going to die because it is very hard on a diabetic when you faint. The paramedics told my mom that he was very lucky that she was awake when this happened. I was told to go and get my dad some food from the continental breakfast. I thought she was going to because I was still in my pajamas and my hair was truly messy. (trust me, you don’t want to see me in the morning)

It is known at, http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_big_can_bats_grow, that bats get up to 35 centimeters tall and at http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Ho- w_long_is_the_wingspan_of_the_largest_bat_the_flying_foxes_of_Asia, that the wingspan can get to 78 inches long! They can get pretty big, but nowhere as close to the size of the bat in this book. The size of the bat in Night of the Bat, the bat is the size of a car! That is enormous! This bat is the one thing that Dr. Lefkovitz wants dead. He knew Jake should have gone home but once that beast is dead he won’t be able to thank Jake enough.

Through and through, Even though the bat was the size of a car, it was still very interesting to find out about. The largest bat in the world still isn’t as big as this bat. I wonder if they ever named the bat; I guess the world may never know. The bat might have killed Hanuma, Radsyar, and almost Jake’s father, but that bat sure as heck isn’t getting Jake. The bat might not know this, but it is probably the most talked about animal in the Amazon. And now the World!

THE END! <3
